RANKINGS: Minnetonka maintains stronghold in 6A

  1. Minnetonka (2-0)

The Skippers maintained their top spot amongst the big schools with a convincing 41-7 win over St. Michael-Albertville. Senior RB Caleb Francois continued to his prowess in the backfield after moving from under center where he played last year with four more touchdowns and 156 yards rushing. He now has 332 yards through two games and seven TDs. He will definitely be in the conversation for Mr. Football come end of the season. But first and foremost, he and the Skippers will look to avenge their defeat in the Prep Bowl to Maple Grove. Up Next: vs. No. 6 Moorhead (2-0)

  1. Maple Grove (2-0)

The Crimson  rushed for 288 yards against Eden Prairie in a hard-fought 28-14 win. Senior RB James Engle, a MSU-Mankato commit, rushed for 201 yards and a touchdown. The defense did their part holding the Eagles to 254 yards of total offense. Up Next:vs. No. 15 Mounds View (1-1)

  1. Shakopee (2-0)

Joseph Taye’s 20-yard run in the fourth quarter gave Shakopee a 16-12 lead, one they wouldn’t relinquish as they held on to defeat Lakeville South in a hard-fought battle between two of the top teams in Class 6A. It was only Taye’s fourth carry of the game. Carson Turner led the Sabers with 107 yards rushing, and Chris Peris also scored on a 29-yard run, but it was the defense who held the Cougars to 12 points that proved to be the difference as the Sabers improved to 2-0. Up Next:at No. 12 Stillwater (1-1).

  1. Lakeville South (1-1)

The Cougars are a team to be reckoned with even though they are a .500 team at this point in the season, coming off a tough loss to a strong Shakopee squad after a convincing 34-7 win in the season opener against Mounds View. Expect them to win in Week 3 against rival Lakeville North to solidify themselves as a Top 5 team. Up Next: vs. Lakeville North (0-2).

  1. Edina (2-0)

Edina’s offense will be tough to deal with all season if they stay healthy. Senior QB Mason West is throwing with pinpoint accuracy and the Hornets double up with a strong running game led by Chase Bjorgaard. West was 17-for-20 in their 40-14 win over Wayata in Week 2, and Bjorgaard ran 20 times for 143 yards and three scores.  West’s top target Jabari Strader caught six passes for 92 yards and a TD. West also ran for two TDs. Credit must also be given to Edina’s offensive line. Up Next: at No. 10 Eden Prairie (1-1).

  1. Moorhead (2-0)

The Spuds survived a late scare from Woodbury in their 34-27 win in Week 2. But even scarier is that QB Jett Feeney, one of the top QBS in the state, left the game in the second quarter after going 5-for-6 with three touchdown passes. Junior RB Taye Reich took over in the second half and finished with 19 rushes for 124 yards and scored three times. Feeney’s health will be key to the Spuds’ success, so we will see what his status is for Week 3. Up Next: @ No. 1 Minnetonka (2-0).

  1. Forest Lake (2-0)

Kevin Ndirangu and Connor Johnson combined for 164 yards rushing and four touchdowns as the Rangers built a 31-0 lead over Anoka before the Tornadoes scored 20 points late. Johnson also had a great night behind center, completing all 11 passes for 100 yards. Ndirangu also had eight tackles on defense to lead the Rangers. Up Next: vs. Park of Cottage Grove (0-2).

  1. Centennial (2-0)

Centennial is winning by committee. Thirteen different players rushed the ball for Centennial in their 49-14 win over Osseo and combined for 325 yards on the ground to lead the Cougars to their second win of the season. Tobie Serna led the team with just six rushing attempts. Calvin Coppersmith and Isaac Belinske-Strauss each scored twice to lead the offense. Up Next: at No. 9 Champlin Park (2-0).

  1. Champlin Park (2-0)

Junior QB Miles Felton connected with senior tight end Isaac Axness with just under a minute to play as the Rebels defeated No. 11 Andover 28-24. It was the second time Felton and Axness connected for a TD on the night. Junior RB Preston Nelson rushed for 118 yards and two scores as well to lead the Rebels. Up Next: vs. No. 8 Centennial (2-0).

  1. Eden Prairie (1-1)

The Eagles had a strong opener against Anoka, winning 49-21, but faced the daunting task of defending state champion Maple Grove in Week 2. They performed admirably, gaining 192 yards with their running attack that includes a plethora of strong backs. They will have an equally daunting task in Week 3 against No. 5 Edina. Up Next: vs. No. 5 Edina (2-0).
