A look at how the top 10 in the
Let’s Play Football Rankings fared in Week 3
The usual suspects did their usual thing Friday night as most ranked teams pulled through with a victory. But there were several games where two ranked teams battled each other, none more important that No. 1 Eden Prairie against No. 2 Lakeville South in 6A. In fact, they could have been ranked 1A and 1B. But there is no question now who the top team in 6A is as the Cougars dismantled the Eagles 42-7.
The top two teams weren’t the only ranked teams who played against each other. Actually, every team in the Class 6A top 10 of the LPF Rankings played another Top 10 6A team. We will see next week if any other 6A squads sneak into the top 10 and if they do, who will be jettisoned out. Rankings are determined through a high school coaches poll.
The big match-up in 5A was between No. 2 Andover and No. 6 Rogers, but it was the Andover Huskies who prevailed handily with a 42-10 win.
The Vikings Prep Spotlight game at TCO Stadium featured No. 3 St. Thomas Academy against Cretin-Derham Hall. Remember, the Raiders dropped down from 6A to 5A this year. Perhaps they should have stayed in 6A as they fell to 0-3 after STA took them to task with a 41-14 win.
A couple other minor upsets had Chanhassen, now 2-1, defeating No. 8 Spring Lake Park 14-7. Chanhassen has given up just 19 points in three games so look for their defense to carry them, and perhaps we will see them crack the top 10 next week.
No. 10 Alexandria was on the wrong end of Sauk Rapids-Rice’s wrath Friday night. SR-R defeated the Eagles 27-13 and are now 3-0. They were featured as our Prep Game of the Week in last week’[s issue of Let’s Play Football you can view here: (https://issuu.com/letsplayhockey/docs/let_s_play_football_sept._16_issue)
The Storm will be headed to Cambridge-Isanti next week with hopes of raining on their parade to go 4-0.
In Class 4A Waconia may be a team to keep an eye on. After losing their opener against Robbinsdale Armstrong, the Wildcats have rebounded with wins over Robbinsdale Cooper and this week No. 7 Orono. That could get them into the top 10.
No. 2 Becker had their hands full with unranked Chisago Lakes, but held on for a 21-14 win. Next week they will battle No. 1 Hutchinson, who had a bye week this week. That will be a must-see game.
And No. 3 Kasson-Mantorville took one on the chin to Mankato East 14-7.
In 3A Albany, our top-ranked team coming into the season based off last year’s undefeated run, lost to Watertown-Mayer 32-8. Albany lost a lot of quality seniors last season, but will undoubtedly bounce back.
But the big upset in 3A was No. 9 Dassel-Cokato beating No. 2 Annandale 35-27. Dassel’s Eli Gillman is proving to be a beast with the ball, scoring four more touchdowns Friday to help the Chargers upset the Cardinals.
In class 2A all went as planned with the top teams winning, but after winning 71 consecutive games, at the time the longest high school winning streak in the nation, Caledonia has lost two of their first three games with a 30-0 loss to Chatfield Friday. Keep in mind, the team’s star quarterback, Eli King, opted to skip football season to focus on his basketball career. King is headed to Iowa State.
In Class A Minneota proved their worthy of the top spot with a 61-0 win. No. 2 BOLD defeated No. 9 Browerville/Eagle Valley 28-14. The big upset came with Bethlehem Academy beating No. 6 Randolph 32-26.
In 9-man No. 6 Lanesboro beat No. 5 Leroy-Ostrander 35-27 in a close contest, and No. 7 Win-E-Mac fell to unranked Goodridge-Grygla-Gatzke 28-22.
It was another great weekend of high school football. Next week we reach the halfway point of the season. There are still plenty of unknowns, which should make for an interesting next five weeks.
