Strong D leads Becker to 4A Prep Bowl

Bulldogs hold Marshall to 38 yards rushing in 28-7 win

Earlier this season Becker Head Coach Dwight Lundeen won his 500th high school football game.

But no win was important as today’s and no win will be as important as the next one for the Becker Bulldogs after their 28-7 win over Marshall to advance to the Class AAAA Prep Bowl.

After a scoreless first quarter where both teams seemed to be feeling out each other’s tendencies, Becker finally got on board when Sawyer Brown threw a TD pass connecting with Mitchell Soltau from 14 yards out and a 7-0 lead after the extra point.

After another stop on defense, one of many for the Bulldog defense, Brown scored again, this time carrying in the ball from the 1-yard line. Another extra point from Evan Norberg made it 14-0.

But Marshall was finally able to put a chink in the Becker defensive armor when on the ensuing kickoff Mason Eickhoff returned the ball 48 yards to the Becker 45. Facing 4th and 5, Marshall QB Levi Maeyaert connected with Andrew Stelter on a 14-yard pass for a first down to keep the drive alive. Senior fullback Gavin Schaefer capped off the drive with a 1-yard TD run to bring the game to within one score at 14-7.

But Becker would score twice more and the Marshall offense could never establish much of a run offense with the Bulldogs holding them to just 38 yards on the ground.

Carter Reckelberg and Cody Klatt also scored touchdowns the Bulldogs who improved to 12-0 and will advance to the 2024 Prep Bowl against either Totino-Grace or Orono who play tomorrow at U.S. bank Stadium.
