Moorhead defeats Lakeville South to earn Prep Bowl berth in inaugural season as 6A squad
It didn’t take long for Moorhead to get to their first Prep Bowl after moving up from Class 5A to 6A.
The Spuds defeated Lakeville South 26-14 Friday night at U.S. Bank Stadium to advance to the Prep Bowl in their first season as a 6A team.
The Spuds were led by junior quarterback Jett Feeney who threw for 228 yards and two touchdowns and also ran for another 73 yards.
Feeney connected with David Mack and Zak Walker for scores and Walker also ran in a touchdown on a double reverse to help lead the Spuds past the 9-2 Cougars.
Lakeville South broke a 7-7- tie early in the second half when Nicolas Swanson capped off a drive with a 2-yard rushing TD. The Cougars relentlessly ran the ball on the Spuds and led 14-7 until midway through the third quarter when Walker scored on the double reverse. Feeney had a long run earlier in the drive to get Moorhead deep into Cougar territory.

Late in the third quarter Feeney found Walker on a 25-yard TD pass to break the 14-14 tie and go up 21-14 with a full quarter yet to play.
Credit has to be given to the Spud defense, who clamped down on the Cougars running prowess, making some key stops and keeping Lakeville South from threatening to tie the game.
The Spuds sealed the deal with 93 seconds remaining when Feeney found Mack on a slant route in the end zone form five yards out and a 26-14 lead. There simply wasn’t enough time on the clock for the Cougars to score twice, giving the Spuds a berth to the 6A Prep Bowl where they will battle Edina. The Hornets are coming off an epic comeback win over Minnetonka, 42-41.

Feeney finished 20-for-29 for 228 yards and two touchdowns. Walker caught seven passes for 128 yards and a TD. Mack also had seven catches for 60 yards.
Lakeville South rushed for 205 yards as a team, led by Griffen Dean’s 119 yards on 26 carries.
The 6A Prep Bowl will pit two of the best quarterbacks in the state with Edina’s Mason West and Moorhead’s Feeney. The two teams played Oct. 15 in Edina with Moorhead outlasting the Hornets 51-44. In that game Feeney threw for 387 yards and four touchdowns, all to David Mack. West threw for 214 yards and three scores.
The game has all the makings for a classic match-up that high school football fans won’t want to miss. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. Friday.
