Minneota back in Prep Bowl for 5th straight year

Vikings take care of Mahnomen/Waubun 28-14

The Minneota Vikings are back in the Prep Bowl for the 5th straight year and looking to win their fourth straight state title in class 1A after beating the Mahnomen/Waubun Thunderbirds 28-14 at U.S. Bank Stadium.

Dating back to 2009 the Vikings have played in seven Prep Bowl title games winning six of them, with their only defeat coming to Mayer Lutheran 20-14 in 2021.

Minneota opened the scoring when senior running back Easton Johnson ran over the right side for seven yards for the touchdown.  The Thunderbirds would answer in the second quarter when senior quarterback Blake McMullen scored from one yard out, then rushed in for a successful two-point conversion and Mahnomen had the lead 8-7.

The Vikings would go on to score twenty-one unanswered points on rushing touchdowns from senior Kellen Bradley from 3 yards out, followed by touchdown rushes of 15 and 2 yards respectively by junior quarterback Tristen Sussner.

Mahnomen/Waubun senior Brody Lhotka finished the scoring with a 7-yard touchdown rush with a little under nine minutes left in the game, but the Thunderbirds could get no closer

Bradley was the workhorse for the Vikings’ ground game gaining 146 yards on 27 carries and a 3-yard touchdown run.

The Vikings will seek their fourth straight class 1A title when they square off against Breckenridge Friday November 21stat U.S. Bank Stadium with kickoff set for 10AM.
