Mahtomedi’s Peer is ranked best amongst her peers
The Minnesota Vikings honored the best of the best Monday with he release of the All-State teams as well as individual awards voted on by coaches.
Flag Football Player of the Year – Sophia Peer • Mahtomedi

Mahtomedi‘s Sophia Peer was ranked best amongst her peers, winning Flag Football Player of the Year Award. Peer was dominant on both sides of the ball during the Zephyr’s run to the state championship where they defeated La-Crescent-Hokah 36-20. Peer scored four touchdowns in the game and also had two key interceptions. Her height and athleticism were tough to defend and her instincts on defense allowed her to jump routes and pick off balls intended for opposing receivers. Peer was also a part of Mahtomedi’s soccer team who won a state title in the fall.
Offensive Player of the Year – Savannah Klinski • La Crescent-Hokah

While Peer was the most outstanding all-around player, the Offensive Player of the Year Award went to La Crescent-Hokah’s Savannah Klinski. Kilinski rushed for 897 yards and also had 1,008 receiving yards and 35 total touchdowns. In the championship game she had 116 receiving yards and two TDs. She is one of the first, if not the first, girls flag football player to receive a scholarship to play at the collegiate level.
Quarterback of the Year – Maddy Freking • Anoka

Anoka’s Maddy Freking is no stranger to awards. She was a finalist for Ms. Softball this spring and while getting it done on the diamond, she also got it done on the gridiron. Freking is tall and athletic with a rifle for a right arm. She completed 61 percent of her passes and threw for 2,381 yards and an astonishing 53 touchdowns to help lead Anoka to the state tournament. Freking is a four-year later winner in both basketball and softball. She will continue her athletic career playing softball at the University of St. Thomas.
Defensive Player of the Year – Abbi Ernster – La Crescent-Hokah

While Klinski was doing the job on offense for the Lancers, Abbi Ernster was doing it on defense. Ernster was a big reason why the Lancers were one of the top two defensive teams in the state and helped get them to the state title game. Quick and agile with a basic instinct of where the ball was going to go, coupled with good hands helped her lead the state with 14 interceptions. Ernster will continue her athletic career playing volleyball at the University of Minnesota-Crookston.
Coach of the Year – Nick Sullivan • Mahtomedi

Mahtomedi coach Nick Sullivan is in his first year at Mahtomedi High School serving as a School Resource Officer. He has served 21 years in law enforcement and took on the job of leading the girls flag football team in their inaugural season. He is no stranger to coaching, having coached his son and daughter in their respective sports. A confessed lover of football, he helped lead the Zephyr’s to an undefeated season and a state title.
