In just the second week of the season, girls flag football is already turning into a gathering of school spirit.  Eagan High School hosted Rosemount, Apple Valley, and Eastview for a double-header of games under sunny skies and a festive atmosphere.  Parents, teachers, classmates, and casual football fans were on hand to take in the games.

Food trucks by Vikings Trail and Brick Oven Pizza lined the entrance of the varsity stadium to welcome the fans.  Those in attendance were treated to a showcase of talent on the field.  Eagan TV was on hand to video the games that saw numerous one-handed grabs that would make Randy Moss proud, flea flickers, reverses, and many other highlight reel type plays that underscore how quick these girls are catching on to the sport.

One of the players whose name was announced numerous times over the P.A. speakers was Eagan senior receiver Courtney Bumpers.

“She’s never played football before.” Courtney’s father Jamey Bumpers said. “She has played soccer and skied, and ran track when she was younger. Now she is trying something different, making new friends and having a lot of fun.”

Bumpers found her way into the end zone for Eagan multiple times on Sunday in a 52-31 loss to Eastview, including standing all alone for well behind the defense on a beautifully executed flea-flicker.

Eagan football mom Carey Egberg talked about how the season has gone so far for her freshman daughter Mia Becker, who also has never played football before. “She’s really bonding with her teammates, and having a great time.”  Becker also participates in volleyball and lacrosse.  The current structure of the Minnesota High School Girls Flag League has created an opportunity for Becker and countless others across the state to try something different.  “I love to see her try new things, she loves it and always ready to jump in there and I’m excited for her.” Edberg said.

Eagan coach Brandon Carl said the event was about more than just the game.  “It’s about celebrating high school sports and creating a memorable experience for both the athletes and the fans.”  With the food trucks, a public address announcer calling the game, and local media streaming it for those not there, the new sport of girl’s flag football is starting to feel like Friday nights in the fall.

This is a historic season—the first year of girls’ flag football in the state, with over 51 teams participating, backed by the Minnesota Vikings and growing community support.
